Movie Review: Zoolander 2 *

Zoolander 2 is a sequel to the movie about a couple of boneheads who became male supermodels in the first edition. Their careers flop and each ends up in their own seclusion. Their lives and relationships have taken a turn for the worse. A modern big time modeling agency contacts them to come out of their self-imposed exile. They return to the fashion game while encountering new hardships, adventures, and opportunities.

The good news: there are a lot of cameo appearances by familiar big name celebrities throughout the movie that were enjoyable. The bad news: the movie is just dumb. I wanted to laugh, but couldn’t find much that was funny–even with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in the lead roles. It was just too obtuse to be funny. I hated it. 1 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review: Deadpool *****

Deadpool is a Marvel Comics superhero revenge movie. Wade Wilson is a smart aleck ex-military small time vigilante who gets small time fees for small time contracts. He gets sick and is targeted for a cure. He gets disfigured in the process, names himself “Deadpool”, and seeks revenge utilizing his new-found abilities.

Deadpool is a trash talking profane sex-addicted remorseless tough guy. He’s very funny, too. This movie earns its R rating early and holds the R rating through the entire movie for language, nudity, and violence. Deadpool is an adult super hero–leave the kids and the church ladies at home. It was actually an appropriate movie for Valentine’s Day. Don’t arrive late and don’t leave early, or you’ll miss some good stuff. The opening is outstanding. The story is excellent. The characters are excellent. The action is excellent. The end is Marvel-ous. I laughed a lot. Ryan Reynolds was perfectly cast as Deadpool. His performance was worthy of Academy Award nomination for best actor. I loved it. I would give it 6 stars if I could, but my scale only goes to 5, so 5 out of 5 stars.
