Movie Review: Expendables III ****

moive expendables 3Expendables 3 is the latest Sylvester Stallone action movie. Many of the previous Expendable characters have fallen, so when the latest mission is offered, it is thought that the remaining Expendables should be replaced by a younger group of mercenaries. They take on the mission, get captured, and are used as bate to attract the old Expendables for a fatal showdown.

Stallone, Dolf Lundgren, Terry Crews, Jason Statham, and Mel Gibson are awesome in their reprise roles. Wesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas look great in these new roles and may be my favorite characters in the movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, and Jet Li are looking pretty old. The newcomers are people I don’t know, but I really liked. The story and its conclusion are very predictable. The action is heavy on the front end and the back end. The middle is a little slow, but takes the time to introduce all of the new, young characters. It would help to have seen the previous Expendable movies to keep up with this one. I am a fan of this type of action movie and loved the first 2 Expendables, so my bias gives it 4 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ****

movie teenage mutant ninja turtlesBased on the cartoon series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the modern version of near-human hero turtles who fight to save New York City. A fluff reporter, April O’Neil, happens upon vigilantes who are protecting the docks from the evil Foot Clan who are stealing chemicals in large quantities. No one believes her when she tells about the mutant turtles who are teenage ninjas. She discovers that these heroes might be the result of her father’s failed experiments from years ago. The evil leader, Shredder, has plans to decimate NYC with a virus, then have a henchman supply the antidote that the city will pay dearly to cure the sick. There is a conflict, a battle, and a resolution that occur without evidence of the turtles existence.

This is a very well done movie with a lot of CGI. You will believe 4 turtles can talk, and fight, and skateboard, and parkour, and beat-box. The origins of the turtles and their connection with April O’Neil is well-told. The plot is good, the story is good, the fight scenes are good, the characters are well-developed. There is a hilarious bonus scene during the credits, but nothing at the end. I liked it. 4 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy ****

movie guardians of the galaxyGuardians of the Galaxy is a Marvel Comics sci-fi movie about saving the galaxy from maniacal rule. A boy is abducted by a space ship and is raised on a far away planet. He grows up to be a scavenger who calls himself Star Lord. He flies his spaceship around looking for stuff he can scavenge and sell to earn a living. He finds an orb that his contacts will not buy. It has immense powers that will attract a war mongering civilization that will stop at nothing to control the power of the orb. Star Lord ends up in prison and enlists the help of misfit aliens to escape and retrieve the orb. There is a conflict, a chase, and a resolution.

This is not a typical Marvel Comics Super Hero movie. It is a well-told story that contains a lot of humor without making it a comedy. I thought the raccoon character in the previews was there for the kids and for comic relief–I was wrong. He was a well developed creature and my favorite character in the movie. You will believe a raccoon can talk. The excellent soundtrack contained a lot of popular music from my youth. There is a hilarious bonus scene during the credits and the promise of a sequel. There is an additional bonus after the final credits that reintroduces a Marvel character from the 1980s. Guardians of the Galaxy is a very good movie for kids and adults. There are a lot of characters from unfamiliar worlds along with a lot of one-liners that needed to be explained to me on our way home. Had I not had any questions, it would have gotten a full 5 stars. Because I didn’t pay close enough attention to the details, I can only give it 4 out of 5 stars. I look forward to seeing this movie again. It was good.
