Movie Review: Deepwater Horizon *****

Deepwater Horizon is a true story about a guy who was on the oil rig when disaster struck and caused the largest oil spill in American history. Mark Wahlberg is an engineer who takes a helicopter for a 6 week stint on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. He and his coworkers are shocked that inspections that take a lot of time were done when they arrive for their shift. They fear that corners were cut regarding safety features. These short cuts could keep the project from being behind schedule. These short cuts could make the project even more profitable. A problem arises and everything goes bad. Then it gets worse. A community of workers try to evacuate amidst fire, explosions, and structural chaos.

This movie is about the decisions that were made that caused the disaster. It does not chronicle the efforts to stop the flow of oil or cap the fire. It ends with the survivor toll. There are facts and figures about the recovery during the credits. The special effects are extremely well done. The graphics are incredibly real at at an intense level. I enjoyed the background of the lead actor. I liked the us vs. them conflict that led to the decisions that were made. I was on the edge of my seat for the 2nd half of the movie. This was as real a disaster movie as I have ever seen, and it is a true story. I loved it. 5 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review: The Gambler **

movie the gambler

The Gambler is a suspense drama starring Mark Wahlberg as a college professor with a gambling problem. He gets deeper into debt and does not fear the consequences. His inheritance doesn’t matter, his life doesn’t matter, his family doesn’t matter, but does his relationship with a student matter?

I was bored with it. The story meandered. The plot was hard to find. I didn’t like it. Surprised that I didn’t walk out and ask for a refund. Maybe it’s because I like Mark Wahlberg. Just 2 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review: Lone Survivor **

movie lone survivor

Lone Survivor is a modern day war movie about Navy Seals targeting al Qaeda militia during the war in Afghanistan. While the opening credits roll, we get a glimpse of the rugged training that Navy Seals endure to prepare for potentially brutal real life missions. Simulations of torture and drowning are a few of the exercises portrayed to train these soldiers for worst case scenarios. A plan is formatted to hike through rugged terrain to get to a village where a key opposition leader is assembling and training rebels. The objective is to get in, hit the target, and get out. Unforeseen circumstances occur, and decisions must be made to complete or abort the mission with consideration given to the rules of engagement.

The movie is based on a true story of American involvement during the war in Afghanistan. Mark Wahlberg stars as the main character. His physique makes him a convincing example of an elite soldier. He could pass as a Navy Seal. His portrayal is believable. The clash between forces and the brutality of war is documented with a long, intense, harrowing firefight in the rugged terrain of Afghanistan.

This movie is not for the squeamish. Lots of F-bombs are used. Gory death scenes, beheadings, fatal falls, and broken bones cross the screen. View the show expecting to see a real depiction of war. Unfortunately, the title of the movie gives away the ending. 2 out of 5 stars,
