Movie Review: Chappie *****

movie chappie

Chappie is a robot movie about Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) starring Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, and Sigourney Weaver. South Africa decides to use A.I. SCOUT Robots as their new police force. Crime is dramatically reduced in a short period of time and criminals are growing restless. One of the developers writes a new program that tries to provide the A.I. robots with consciousness. His boss has other priorities and tells him to scrap the project. Instead, he steals a robot reject and tests his program. It works. But Chappie, the robot with the mind of a child, needs to learn… everything. He falls into the wrong hands and is raised by hoodlums. He learns to be a gangsta and is tricked into a life of crime. A rival programmer sabotages the SCOUT program to get his more menacing MOOSE robot online as an alternative, and paints Chappie as the problem that needs to be eliminated. Chappie’s creator attempts a rescue. A major conflict with a certain result occurs that sets up a sequel.

This is not a kid’s movie–lots of F-bombs, and a few disturbingly graphic scenes. Good vs. evil is the main theme. Friendship, trust, and loyalty are additional topics that are presented. You will feel empathy for Chappie. I loved it. 5 out of 5 stars.
